I wish all phone keyboards had a easy toggle to turn off all “smart autocorrect” features so it types exactly what you entered with no changes when you want to
I fucking hate the policing of words by admin dickheads and corporate censorship algorithms online. Policing other people’s language flies in the face of every freedom and right people have fought and died for. Also the internet is the easiest place to ignore people, give people who care the tools to filter their feeds and comments instead of blanket banning everyone, cause it might upset some vocal minority
Who the fuck do these people think they are, deciding what we can and cannot say, what we can and cannot express?
I never really understood the whole “No really, we HAVE to guillotine them all” attitude of the 18th century French until I met tech bros.
I think you’re being a little reactionary, it’s more about offending someone by suggesting these things when they WEREN’T what they were actually trying to say. Autocorrecting to insults or swears could get someone in potentially serious trouble. It’s easy to imagine the viral facebook post “My iPhone got me fired!” Or even “iPhone is teaching my kids bad words!”
On 4th of June, 1989, in Tiananmen square, Beijing, nothing particularly interesting happened.
Apple’s autocorrect is the best example of enshittification that exists to date. It was exponentially better 10-15 years ago.
It’s probably good if my phone doesn’t call my mother a cunt while telling her I’m bringing the cocaine by default, but I should be able to toggle that.
just give it to me, and i’ll bring that cunt her blow
I suppose that explains somewhat why the stupid swipe on this fucking phone is so dog shit.
I need a Linux phone. :/
We all need a good Linux phone we can completely control the software on.
Built in an ethical country.
Whats /e/os up to these days? Anyone have expirence to speak on it? Pitch it to us, channel the late Billy Mays.
It is a fork of LineageOS with Murena bloatware and very late security updates. Lineage (best for wide device support) and Graphene (best for security and actively fixing compatibility with apps) are much better choices.
I’ve used iode for some time, which is similar, and it was great. I’m on GrapheneOS now and it’s also good. De-google Android is doing great for now.
Sigh. Yeah, that really vibe-coded it’s way right off the deep end. Fucking AI.
I kind of had the exact opposite of that in mind when I wrote my comment.
Wdym?
There are reports that the founder of the project Gaël Duval has had a bit on an AI-nyrism:
Refer to: https://feddit.dk/post/26068400/23217982
Was that just the founder or is that official for the project? Because my last stand is that /e/os have taken this stance:

Ah, so he goes with the state of the art. That’s reassuring. Good.
Correctly used AI is a great leverage for small companies.
Shame…
I actually like Apple a lot more than I thought I would. But swipe typing on it is absolute dog shirt.
I have one, it is my daily driver, and I love it!
Sailfish OS has proprietary components and they were working with Russia, so I don’t trust them.
Mine should be sent out soon!
Interesting. To what degree does it allow the software it’s running to be customized? Say, if I wanted to install and run dnscrypt on it or firejail the browser, would I be able to?
You can run whatever you want or write. You get sudo.
Excellent. The price point of 700 Euro is a little spicy, but I certainly like everything else about it.
Cool, will be looking at this come upgrade time
I’m hoping the flipper one can be my new phone!
flipper one
It’s a hella cool little device. Not sure how well it’d work as a phone, but I want one too.
Sim support : check
Microphone : check
Speaker : check
Bluetooth : check
Looks like it has all the hardware covered, just need to install the software. Hopefully software will eventually support the hardware if it doesn’t out of the box. That’s my hope anyway.
Sure. I was more thinking about ergonomics. The, um, user interface isn’t exactly very phone-oriented. But maybe pluggable external HIDs can make up for that.
Unfortunately if you want to use modern phone technologies you’ll never have complete control of the software
While “never” seems a little defeatist to me, it’s not like you’re currently wrong. I strongly suspect there’s more than a few unpleasant surprises lurking deep in Quamcomm’s firmware for example.
All the 3GPP tracking standards they don’t want you turning off
3GPP
That too, although I had in mind something that wasn’t publicly available (if obscure) knowledge.
iOS supports third-party keyboards, if you’re willing to try a keyboard from the App Store.
I know Google has a plethora of their own issues, but at least Gboard lets me say whatever the fuck I want, and it’s easy as hell to change the settings (there’s literally a shortcut on the keyboard that takes you to its settings).
Fairphone has the best support for flashing onto. I have a Purism Librem 5 because I like the hardware kill switches, but requires tinkering to optimize performance, and even then, the hardware is still a decade old.
Is the keyboard on iOS getting worse every year or am I in the early stages of some horrific degenerative disease?
They trimmed a huge amount of terminology and an abundance of everyday words, and made it check grammar and punctuation despite the fact that it is objectively terrible at both. It is a fair bit worse now than 10 years ago.
The keyboard and speech to text are getting notably worse and have been for years. I’ve been somewhat of an Apple defender over the years, but you are not imagining it. I’ve used androids and iPhones to compare them for accessibility purposes and the iPhone used to be significantly better. I keep my tech for as long as possible, but I’ve on more than one occasion thought about jumping ship just because the worsening text capabilities sometimes makes my phone unusable for basic communication purposes.
Is yours ancient like mine? I thought the same but went into a shop and specifically tried the keyboard of a demo 17 and it worked as well as I recall it used to. Either that or we have the same disease. 50-50 at this point.
Is a 16 consdered ancient? I def know people who reup every year or two but that seems crazy wasteful.
Damn well that dashes my hopes then. I’ll meet you in the retirement home early I guess. I’m running an XR in a perhaps bordering on excessive attempt to counter said yearly reup culture.
Apple autocorrect and suggestions are pure shit. Especially on the touch swipe keyboard; it will just straight up make up words
I think it got even worse when they went to “AI” (Aborted Intelligence) in 2024, and they just have too much hubris to fix it
I feel like this should be regulated. We should not let private interests arbitrarily mold our speech just because that speech is being mediated by platforms that they create.
Edit: For the record, I’m not making a free speech absolutist argument.
Double plus good point.
Yeah, the first amendment doesn’t apply to private companies, but we really, really need a digital bill of rights
Mold our speech, tell us what we can or can’t watch on the internet, and teach the general public to self-censor.
I hate this modern day bullshit. Just let me watch the pron I want, say the shit I want, when I want.
Self censoring by mis-spelling the word porn is quite the touch of irony in a comment like this on a platform like this
I was typing fast give me a fucking break. Childlike responses like that are why we’re in the shit we are now.
For the record, I’m not making a free speech absolutist argument.
That’s a really strange disclaimer over a fundamental right akin to
I’m not a self-determination absolutist
I’m not a due-process-of-law absolutist
I’m not a freedom-of-movement absolutist
I’m not a freedom-of-conscience absolutist
I’m not a warranted-search-and-seizure absolutist
Absolutism here isn’t mentioned to disclaim protection of illegal speech, because that’s already unprotected, and no one here would dispute that. In this context, absolutism disclaims protection of unpopular speech people here would denounce, so it disclaims freedom of speech entirely.
This denies the presumption of a fundamental right as protected, which is entirely backward. Fundamental rights are presumed protected, whereas attempts to restrict or challenge them need strict scrutiny. The less common disclaimer
I’m not a censorship absolutist
is an asymmetry revealing a copout.
As for regulation, it’s a private device people are free to denounce, customize, or reject for a competitor. People have the liberty to produce & choose censored junk. An open society doesn’t restrict such choices when it can leverage fundamental rights[1] to denounce, criticize, and challenge.
this community seems to cower from defending ↩︎
I added the disclaimer to my comment because there is speech that is legal, but i think is okay for private entities to regulate on their own platforms. A couple of examples that I considered:
While it’s legal to say really racist shit, it’s okay for something like an internet forum to mod such speech if they want to enforce some community standards.
It’s legal to spread misinformation about a global pandemic, but it’s okay for a private entity to mod it if they decide they dont want to contribute to hurting people.
My point is that I think private entities can regulate speech on their own platforms in some ways, but not others. Some thoughtful nuance is required and we need regulation that enforces all this. Left to their own, corporations like apple will hurt us.
Your word thinking is double plus bad
I mean, I get slurs and stuff but drugs, sex, chauvinist? Like the one scenario it makes sense is to avoid Karens suing because a kid mashes the keyboard on the device they handed off raising their kids to, and ends up on an inappropriate website or something. Freeze peach barely even enters into it. Edit: I’ve worded this poorly I mean it seems like something more overt than a free speech issue. Like something that started as liability shielding that blew out. Ah well.
Even if it’s a kid using your phone, they still aren’t trying to type “ducking”.
It shouldn’t be like that, but go into the dictionary and autocorrect whatever it tries to change it from, or make an abbreviation etc. I forced mine to stop saying “duck” instead of the fuck word.
the fuck word.
Oh? And which word is that, exactly? hehehe
It’s kind of funny. Some years back when I used to use Gboard I had to opposite problem
I wanted to text a friend to meet at the Golden Nugget Casino.
It has a bigger parking lot and a buffet.
Gboard would try to change those words to racial slurs. Had to go into the dictionary override settings and specifically delete certain words so it would never suggest them
You know Gboard uses all your typing history to make suggestions, right?
(just teasing you)
Tech billionaires/CEOs are all weird control onsessed perverts and sickos trying to modify users beliefs rather than making good technology that serves users.
What kind of sick fucks spend their time on this 1984 bullshit. The fuckwits.
They’re trying to outlaw/make it as hard as possible to access porn and it’s fucking ridiculous.
What most people call “algorithms” are not algorithms, artificial intelligences have replaced math formulas to back the recommendations your phone makes to you. Welcome to techno-feudalism!
that’s literally algorithms lol.
Algorithms are discrete operations done in a sequence, they are typically blind to ideas or personal opinions and are used for data processing, filtering, or calculations. Facial recognition algorithms are typically what you would call a complex algorithm as it uses conditions based on what the camera captures to make decisions as to where the face of said person is, if it is a person, are they smiling? What are their physical traits? Do they have white, brown, or dark skin, to adjust the contrast level for a good photo.
Artificial intelligence models are not math driven. They are language models, trained through machine learning and operating on a transformer architecture. Not only do they not replicate the reasoning a human (they predict the probability of action based on statistics of choices of others) and are most definitely going to be used to influence choices and opinions, not in an educational manner but in coercive and controlling manner. And it will become very hard to understand what AI produced propaganda will become. Even scarier though to me, is that it will be even harder to understand the effects of AI use, since all political actions have a direct effects which are often easy to predict, but they also cause these “ripple effects” which are the more dangerous side of politics and these ripple effects caused by AI use in politics will be impossible to predict for me, you and the AIs due to their early stage.
Algorithms are based on logic whereas LLMs are based on learning. LLMs have a layer of semantic understanding, which makes them more powerful.
laughs in sw engineer.
Meanwhile I, systems engineer wonders why the IT dude called himself an “engineer”
it dude? lol. i make robotics. including computer vision and ml. worry not. i’ll think of you every time an algorithm gets too many layers and starts to smell like an ai.
Computer vision and machine learning has little to do with robotics, but alright since you seem to work with know something about thermodynamics and are not a sys_admin like all the desk jockeys, i ll be nice and call you the E word.
But robotics itself is such a small niche that random people invoke because they see it in movies that I am skeptical to believe it as a systems and automation engineer, that s basically as close as 95% of engineer will ever get to robotics unless you re in China (mechatronics is not robotics btw) or work for Kuka/ABB…
lol. say that to my 6 axis machine that picks and pours and places.
bad bot. try again.
Artificial intelligence itself is a series of math formulas on very big vectors though.
I know it is but I do not want to call it an algorithm? I’m asking as someone who doesn t work in it but pretty close. As I see it, AI is a set of functions turned into tensor operations in a dimensional space (basically my university matrices class) and the parameters weights are adjusted based on collected data (human data as i understand in this case it could be reddit comment libraries or books or Meta data ).
That last bit is why I don’t confuse it with an algorithm since then it would be a heuristic. Algos are predictible, like running a graphic simulation that uses a physical and logic model, yeah id agree that s all a system of algorithms. Heuristic in terms of structure and method may look like algorithms but they are “rule of thumb” approximations for specific problems where we cannot build a math system (like an algo). At this point it is the human element and adaptation of the AI to you that would make it a heuristic.
Makes sense?
Shh!
In case you didn’t read, this is for swiping. If you type the example listed “United Ireland” that is okay. Try swiping that same thing and you are autocorrected to United Iceland.
I don’t know anyone that swipes.
Hi, me, I do a lot of swipe input. On Android, though.
I guess I’m weird but I can’t imaging not swiping. How did it not win out as the default input method?
Not weird. I think it must be a specific age group that tap-types faster than they swipe.
Yeah, I don’t have patience to type if it’s not a real keyboard. Swiping is what I’ve done for years on my Android phones.
I swipe. Everyone I know swipes. When I used an iPhone, swipe was the sole reason I installed Gboard. I think you might have to be of a very specific age to be able to tap-type as fast as you can swipe.
But also, I injure my thumb (dry skin, it cracks) often enough that I can’t use that for my primary input method. Not being ancient yet, I can’t imagine tap-typing with just my forefinger.
Of all the headlines they could have picked…
