ICE spokesperson Jason Chudy said the agency arrested Javar because he allegedly failed to disclose a criminal conviction when applying for his immigrant visa in 1995. Chudy declared that Javar was “therefore ineligible to remain in the United States now.”
This is the kind of stuff that previous administrations overlooked and used their discretion on. This administration is mainly applying the immigration law strictly according to the letter. The immigration laws themselves really suck and they have for a long time.
A cop buddy of mine once told me: “There’s the spirit of the law, and the letter of the law. The cops in my department who go by the letter of the law are the worst people to work with.”
On the other hand, discretion in applying the law is often an excuse for the pigs to harshly punish people of colour while letting white people off. I think it’s important for laws to be applied equally to all and if the laws need to change they need to change.
People who act like laws are always written perfectly to cover every possible situation are fucking morons who have absolutely NO business working in law enforcement. People are imperfect, and the things written by them even moreso.

Hypothetically, let’s say a political party passes a law against murder that mandates long prison sentences, then another political party comes along and uses the same law to jail people who have not committed murder, is the first political party responsible for what the second political party did?
In case you are confused by my comment, you have to read the article to understand. It alleges democrats are responsible for creating the immigration enforcement structures which republicans are now abusing.
Now imagine the first party comes back into power and goes ‘wow, thank god that will never happen again!’ twice more and does nothing to change the incredibly abuse-prone system, and you might have something approaching an analogy with context. Republicans are not the only party that has been in power since 9/11.
This is completely ignoring that historically ‘centrist’ (conservative) Democrats have championed their immigration stance as ‘common sense’, ie indistinguishable from their Republican opponents.
