Hypothetically, let’s say a political party passes a law against murder that mandates long prison sentences, then another political party comes along and uses the same law to jail people who have not committed murder, is the first political party responsible for what the second political party did?
In case you are confused by my comment, you have to read the article to understand. It alleges democrats are responsible for creating the immigration enforcement structures which republicans are now abusing.
Now imagine the first party comes back into power and goes ‘wow, thank god that will never happen again!’ twice more and does nothing to change the incredibly abuse-prone system, and you might have something approaching an analogy with context. Republicans are not the only party that has been in power since 9/11.
This is completely ignoring that historically ‘centrist’ (conservative) Democrats have championed their immigration stance as ‘common sense’, ie indistinguishable from their Republican opponents.
