Mississippi actually does deserve a lot of credit for the effort it’s put into literacy. Kids who fall behind get extensive tutoring during school hours (not making it an extra program they have to attend after school was important), emphasis on phonics (a huge problem with reading education for years, everywhere in the US has been deviating from that), etc. if every state did that for kids we’d be a lot better off.
