I don’t know why everybody is hating on this so much. Sure, it’s mid range and overpriced for what it is, but it’s also literally a plug and play Linux box. Can’t complain about that.

    LTT owns a private jet.

    Since Dec 2025, it has emitted 339.6 t CO₂ — 71x the average person’s annual carbon footprint. Commercial would’ve been 7.1 t.

Honestly this doesnt add anything to a otherwise healthy discussion in this threat. This is a Linux focused community and not at all about the climate. So many other people own private jets.

Expanding upon your mix, Some say that Linux distros should or shouldn’t comply with age verification. Should or shouldn’t be libre and copy left. Should or shouldn’t accept llm authored contributions. There is nothing wrong with talking about the politics of Linux.

The climate crisis and how it is made worse by a well-known figure in this field is definitely on topic.

      https://linux-speakup.org/speakup.html

Speakup, originally written by Kirk Reiser and Andy Berdan, is a screen review package for the Linux operating system.

Speakup allows you to interact with applications and the GNU/Linux operating system with audible feedback from the console using a synthetic speech device.

Speakup is licensed under the GNU General Public License.

Speakup allows you to navigate around the screen using the typical screen review functions such as say word, say line, announce cursor position, which console your currently on, and much, much more. It also allows one to load in configuration parameters for controlling various aspects of the synthesizer you are using, as well as speakup itself.

He let money and fame go to his head and lost touch with what was important; his ego is more important than doing the right thing to him. Constant inaccuracies in their videos. Original emplyoyees started jumping ship because they weren’t making enough. A bunch of scandals including messing up a review and tanking a startup before auctioning off the prototype the company lent them, employee harassment/verbal abuse, etc.

Good summary. I also remember it didn’t sit quite right with me that they were having company employees work on their private home renovation (and a second one, and maybe a third one, if I’m not mistaken?). “Here’s a long format YouTube video of people hoping to make it big in the media/tech industry doing up their millionaire bosses’ house” … Really?

Any new computer for $1000 bucks is going to have middling performance these days, I don’t think Linus was arguing against that. He just appreciated the curated experience and whatnot. I’d argue that I’ve had a very similar experience on Kubuntu, but I will also say that the updates haven’t always been as smooth as on my SteamDeck, but then again that’s also true on Windows.

In the end I’m just glad that Linux is getting more attention overall. Maybe someone will see this, decide that the Steam Machine isn’t the best for them, and install some other OS with KDE and have a similar experience. Whatever you think of Linus, him saying that 2026 is the year of the Linux desktop is a positive thing.

Just realizing that the PC i built myself as a teen for about $1000 back then would probably be like $2000 in today’s money, not even counting the recent spike in RAM and storage.

      $1000 today is like $500 back then…

Yhea steam machine was designed to be faster than 75% (not your top 25% top gaming PC). I think think it’s fair of a lot of people to compair there before RAM-boom prices expensive computers to such an device.

I kind of agree with Linus here that SteamOS is an excellent option for a simple gaming OS, I will probably add another option to boot to soon

So despite all the controversy about LTT. If we can put that aside for a moment. I do think this is in general good advertising for Linux. LTT does have a very large audience. And a lot of “normie” users that watch as well. He’s Linux choices and info could defiantly use some improvements though.

Sort of, but unfortunately the Steam Machine is supply constrained, so more advertising for the SM specifically isn’t that helpful. Maybe he should try other Linux OEMs too, or beginner friendly KDE distros in general like Kubuntu

You are welcome to spoon feed all of the linus fans with the flavour of the month distro"s, or now I guess with steam os. Less than 5% of them will be worth it. It’s very ironic to end up at linux due to someone like linus.

How did you even get that conclusion from my post? Like I said and maybe you missed it in my first comment… But he’s “Linux choices and info could defiantly be improved”

I don’t think steam OS is a great choice for a general use desktop. Far from it actually. I don’t even use many of the hyped distros my self. Mainly staying on opensue, alpine and some others for my stuff.

Still saying “Linux” and mentioning KDE being viable for desktop use is a good thing.

The only reason they are speaking of steamOS now is bevcause thats the current trend. The same way when Mint was the trend. The same way when zorin… Garuda… You get it.
