No one wants to rent games that go away eventually.
No one wants to compete against try-hards and cheaters over and over again.
No one wants “Gen Z” artwork and camera angles and cutscenes. (Which isn’t even really that; it’s just what gets labeled as that)
No one wants Tycho making the artwork for your game, or stealing it from humans.
If you can’t figure out how to make a good game, perhaps you deserve your fate.
I like extraction games and I have a friend who likes them as well, we’ll usually at least try every single extraction game that comes out. We tried Marathon but didn’t buy it. Why? It was okay, but after closing the game, neither of us felt that “I want to play again” vibe, the game is just too much of the same, the only different thing is the graphics, which are not particularly that important for the type of game. But the main reason I didn’t want to buy was even simpler: I did not want to spend money in a game that very likely would be plugged off too soon. I have no faith that Marathon will be a long term endeavor, so no point wasting my money and time with it.
I have no faith that Marathon will be a long term endeavor
Loving the irony of that name with how it’s being perceived
This really explains how I feel about most new games. They’re just checking the boxes of what a game should have, but the games are still missing that critical piece that draws me in
No one asked for this game.
No one wanted a Marathon game that didn’t center around a main PvE campaign.
No one wants Bungie to chase trends.
Bungie used to create the moulds that everyone else used to create games; they were the trend setters. Starting the last couple years of Destiny 2, they forgot how to be creative and instead started chasing trends and turning Destiny 2 into something it wasn’t:
- Oh, you want metroidvania style gaming, Bungie literally turned you into the Metroid ball and threw in Castlevania-style mechanics
- You want roguelike/roguelight? They create The Nether and The Coil.
- You like Star Wars? Bungie gave you light sabers and turned the Cabal into fat storm troopers and turned Dredgen into sith crybabies.
- Not to mention all the collaboration skins that made no sense in the world of Destiny 2.
Bungie has no identity any more. Anyone who made their identity in the past is gone. They have a barebones team who are running out of duct tape to prop up the only remaining game they have that no one wants to play, no one asked for and no one gives a shit about.
Sony shutdown the wrong game and has the absolute worst business sense I’ve ever seen lately (ditching physical discs, shutting down D2 over Marathon, raising PS+ prices for new subsribers, no longer releasing single player games on PC, etc.).
Bungie won’t last a year. Blame Pete Parsons’ greed. Blame Herman Hulst and Sony’s inability to give gamers what they want. Doesn’t matter. The writing’s on the wall for that studio and it’s a fucking shame.
Is it really a Marathon game if Durandal isn’t telling you to assert your humanity by killing things?
No one ever likes Tycho, they know what they did.
I don’t understand why peer to peer multiplayer died. You can still play those games multiplayer easy, no central server needed.
The Try hards thing is so real. I love Overwatch but can’t play anymore for this rwason. Same for Fortnite Battle Royale mode.
These companies really really need to tighten matchmaking.
Their obsession with FOMO killed my interest in their games and from that article I can tell they are still doing it and it’s their own fault. This isn’t some corporate mandate. They’ve been doing it since original Destiny. Just make a fucking game and let us play it. Stop time gating shit.
Not to say that’s the reason their games are failing. It’s just how I feel.
It’s the same reason I never played Fortnite. If I have the log in for some FOMO event I’m out. I’m here to play a game not get some exclusive SUPREME merch drop.
God I really wish they had made it a single player game instead. It has such cool lore, vibes and design elements. The trailer introduced such a vibe that is completely absent in the actual game. I wanted more of whatever the trailer was serving us.
What’s ridiculous too is that they have everything to make a single player. It used to be back in the boomer shooter days. They brought it back but just couldn’t say no to another shitty live service skin store game ‘cuz muh profitz’. I’m hoping we see a paradigm shift here soon of well developed games as these soul sucking ghoul corpos collapse because their profit whoring.
Let me play it on Linux and honestly I’d still be playing this. But after you guys made Destiny raids I kinda dont want to do anything else you’ve made. You shoulda made a game that was all that.
I wish they made an MMOFPS.
A real MMOFPS.
I dreamed about that playing Halo as a kid, and it kinda blew my mind when I actually found it in Planetside 2. That game was like black magic, jank and all.
It doesn’t even exist in the market now. Well, Planetside is technically still there, I guess, but its a zombie, and it’s playerbase is just too old.
An extraction shooter though. Really? I have nothing against the format, but there are a bazillion of them. I guess that’s why, as much as I love Bungie, I barely even glanced at Marathon.
Funny enough, if the rumors are true, there is work being done to make a Halo MMOFPS live service game with customizable characters.
I’ll believe it when I see it, but here’s hoping.
Edit: Actually, it looks like just this month Microsoft killed it with the restructuring and layoffs they just had. FML.
Tragic.
On par for 2026.
Ugh. A “Halo Planetside” would have been a money printing machine for MS, even if it was just mediocre. Maybe it was in dev hell though; we’ll probably never know.
This game has so much information overload when I tried the beta. Onboarding was a chore and I didn’t feel like spending 10+ hours just getting my feet wet. Bungie came out and said basically “we know it’s daunting for new players but we want the player to work for it.” Okay, well I guess you just shrank your player base.
Its a marathon not a sprint, duuuuh.
I wish these fuckers would learn from Arc Riaders. Give us more options to stay away from sweaty ass try hards that have 12 plus hours a day to play. Make something MMO-esque where we feel like a community OUTSIDE of matches. I know everyone has their preferences but I feel like it’s an untapped market, especially with as much as current gens like coop games. It’s just a short hop from coop to MMO, just have to bridge the gap.
I wonder if they’ll acknowledge they fucked up when they chose Marathon over Destiny before the end.
I liked it but I didn’t love it. Their season 2 didn’t address any of the concerns or add any systems that would have improved the game and it was hard to justify having a drive dedicated to windows to begin with. If they can’t support Linux, which far smaller companies have been able to achieve, then I’m done with the game unfortunately. I’d love to see its season 3 or play it’s PvE mode they just temporarily released but alas.
What are some Ubisoft live service games that have actually been good?
When I think of Ubisoft, I think of Oni, Driver, AC black flag…
Pretty sure Oni was Bungie
Oh you’re right. Far cry was ok
