Here in California, the threat to emigrate is totally a bluff. Our economy is big enough that corporations would lose too much business trying to avoid our state. In fact, the robust system of California institutions and regulatory agencies are exactly why the technology industry has continued to stay here (and not, say, move to Texas, where they’d be taxed less). Billionaires want to be able to live here and have property here and do business here.
If they really want to try to pull up stakes and move to North Dakota (or Argentina – also good riddance) it means having to sell off their assets here, and the assets will stay and be taxable no matter what billionaire owns them.
Instead, I expect they’ll hire lobbyists by the dozens to beleaguer our representatives to try to kill those bills or at least insert workarounds. Or they’ll try to do what the farming coalitions are trying to do, and pass federal legislation that stops California from regulating industry.
Fun story, the ISPs got together to kill net neutrality regulation at the Federal level, and so in 2018 California passed a net neutrality gold standard, which meant that ISPs had to adhere to those regulations for all traffic going in and out of California, which made it really difficult for them to segregate traffic that didn’t go through the state.
It’s election year here, and I have no hope whatsoever that things will change.
Trump and the Republican party seem determined to make sure things only get progressively worse. So far they’ve been really incompetent about it, but I don’t know how big the voting bloc is that is under the thrall of their propaganda. If there are enough MAGA loyalists, if they can successfully suppress enough votes, if gerrymandering works to win more Republican seats, if the administration is able to capture voter rolls and start caging votes nationwide, then yeah, nothing will change and we’re all going to be skipping meals and losing weight.
After that, I expect it to take months or even years before the public collectively decides it has nothing left to lose.
I mean, yeah, I hope all that works out in favour of change because I’m sick and tired of the U.S. fucking around on the world stage screwing with the rest of us. The current administration needs to go. It shouldn’t have made it in in the first place. Hell, I’m still astonished he made it in 2016.
When I said that it’s election year here, I didn’t mean the U.S. I’m not American. I live in a U.S. wannabe country, that my entire life has aspired to be like big daddy America. Some people are finally disillusioned, but I don’t think it’ll be enough. I worry we’re too far gone.
