Its probably more about the angles, lighting, and timing. I was never good at taking selfies but I’ve had friends photograph me in the moment of things i like, such as paddling or fishing, and they hit much different.
This is how my candid photos hit
Focal length as well. The front facing camera and the cameras on the back of the phone are quite different.
I’m not well versed in photography. Which one has the longer/shorter focal length? And is one better than the other for face photos?
The back of the phone camera is going to be better for faces. The front facing camera compresses too much and distorts people’s facial features slightly!
Well that’s ironic, given the biggest purpose of the front-facing camera is for selfies. lol
They also take 1000 photos to produce 2 good looking ones.
More pixels = more detailed ugly
I look best on my DSi camera. It almost makes me look pretty.

Heavy emotional damage.
The problem might be the photographer. Hand that fancy camera to a friend. The results may still show your ug, but they’ll look more natural.
I hear some new phones come with a beauty filter with the stock camera app so we can lie to ourselves in HD at least.
