Seems that there’s some kind of issue with standardization of markdown. Yours looks like just html tags on mine.
I added in html tags just to see what it would affect. Weird bug.

^*I think for superscript on long sentences you just put one carrot at the beginning and end of your sentence like so.^
~Subscript uses a tilde at the beginning and end of the sentence~
