There are an estimated 12,000 ballots left to count as of late Thursday evening. Most of those ballots are from Arapahoe County. Only 85 percent of the county’s votes are reported. Arapahoe County supported Laubacher overwhelmingly (60.9 percent) to Boebert’s 35.8 percent.

According to NBC News, Boebert must win 61.4 percent of the remaining vote to overtake Laubacher.

Love the political defeat of this fascist.

Don’t love the rampant sexism and slut shaming in the comments here.

Yep, here we go again, just like with Nicki, the Lemmy sexism problem is showing itself again. Sexism and misogyny is never okay, it’s interesting that many of the sexists here probably consider themselves leftists.

I will donate 14.88 to her next campaign in your honor. I hope she can recover and return to being unabashedly evil and calling for the murder of my family members. Truly, this is the saddest day 💔💔 Our noble girls need to stay home where a strong man can protect them from evil people insulting them on the Internet. Unbelievable misogyny 😭😭😭

I don’t really think it’s slut shaming to make fun of the woman for jerking off some man in a theater with a bunch of people around. I don’t give a shit if you want to sleep around, and I also don’t give a shit if you want people to watch. That’s all fine. The people around need to consent though. It’s shaming her for being an asshole, which overlaps her sluttiness.

Not only that, but view her through the context of an entire family of sexual predators. Husband? Predator. Son? Predator? Her? Sexual activities in broad daylight in front of kids–shitty as hell.

We are making fun of horrible people for the horrible shit that they do, not their gender identity. I would categorize it the same as mocking Trump or Gatez for being predators.

100 percent. It’s false equivalency to compare the jokes and insults in this comment section to misogyny and ‘slut shaming’.

On one hand, you’re right - we shouldn’t stoop so low. On the other hand, is another man’s penis at a showing of the Beetlejuice touring production in Denver.

Yeah same. Feels like the commentators really just waited for an “socially acceptable” opportunity to let out their misogyny.

Something something “they don’t care if a liberal calls them evil, but if they get called a [slur] it might seem like it’s coming from someone whose opinion they want to cater to. instead of someone whose opinions they dismiss. And because they are bigoted, being called a [slur] or a slut actually feels like a bad thing to them, instead of the hurtful language of people who don’t matter and shouldn’t be listened to. Use what hurts them.”

I always wondered how to feel about this, when I saw people let loose with bigotry-showing insults against really bad people with conservative and bigoted beliefs. I always leaned towards not liking it on the same grounds as you. I doubt the effectiveness of a random Internet commenter getting bigoted, except towards the big powerful bigots instead of a little guy, in demotivating these people to do bad things. Especially on Lemmy instead of Truth Social or Facebook.

I do wonder how many of the commenters saying this are non-progressives who do think being promiscuous is bad, and thus are not being inconsistent in progressive sex-positive beliefs when they slut-shame—we just assumed they are progressive because we oppose the same people. And how many are progressives who need to do some more work in unpacking bigotry—going mask-off when it’s a Bad Person and showing they still believe somewhere that promiscuity is wrong and dirty, they just hold back the mean comments for Good People. (Or maybe they are full progressive and don’t believe it’s wrong and dirty at all. They are just doing it to hurt the big bad woman who has many political supporters and allies who do believe it is wrong and dirty, and she may herself believe it is wrong and dirty. But onlookers may still read the comments and wonder if that must be their real thoughts about them.) Same for the misogyny. This meme, but with misogyny and slut-shaming instead of bodyshaming

Yes, people do sometimes bring up stuff that is totally inoffensive in insults just because they are trying to be hurtful. But I think the amount of people making bad reference to her brunette-ness (something Americans have deemed irrelevant and inoffensive and not something worth mentioning, as far as I know) in insults is way lower than the amount of people making bad reference to her womanhood or sexual activity, which is probably telling.

I think it also creates ammunition for “look at the progressives, they are just hypocrites, they say sex is good and women are equal. But when someone they don’t like does sex and is a woman, they act the same as the rest of us.”

Wish I had that meme last week, when commenters were body shaming Nicki Minaj. Apparently back-tracking with “bUt sHe HaD sUrGeRy” makes it okay to make blanket statements that insult people who naturally have large bottoms.

I guess I didn’t see those comments. But of all the things to shame Nicki over…choosing to shame her over her body is quite a choice.

Lemmy started off more mature and feminist than reddit but it’s become an equivalent shithole over time.

I may just unplug from social media for a long time at this point.

Is calling her a slut bigotry though? I’m a whore. I like sex, I like women and I like men, amongst other things. My partner knows this and even she has openly said she was a whore/slut back when she was younger. I’d never shame others for doing what I do, and I’d never act better than anyone who even does a fraction of what I do.

Bobo did that, though. She acted holier than thou. She came off like she was better than everyone and that she didn’t have any stains on her white dress. To me that means when you go and act like that and then do slutty stuff don’t be surprised if you’re called a hoe.

The issue is when you start saying things like that, dropping accusations like that, it’s not only about the person you’re insulting and you. There are other people in the equation. To my mind there are two elements to this:

First: say someone comes from a religious background and isn’t quite so sexually liberated as you and so already struggles with that internalized guilt. Call someone a slut in front of that person and all of a sudden they are witnessing something they’re afraid of in themselves being turned against someone as a weapon to hurt, and now they have to deal with more fear of the shame, this time from you. That’s the thing: you say you’d never shame someone, but how are they supposed to feel safe around you if they see you do it to someone else?

Second: the things we say and do inform the norms of social interaction. Every time you direct an attack rooted in bigotry at someone you establish, just a little bit, the norm that it is acceptable to do so. It leaves the door open for those who might not be so discerning as you to enter the conversation, participate in that bigotry, and then take that a step too far.

Like, sure, you can argue that the insult is coming from a place of “I don’t believe this is wrong, but I know you do, so fuck you.” But the way we handle these conversations dictates more than just that conversation: it impacts social norms as a whole in a way that spits in the face of common decency. I don’t think that’s something we should consider an acceptable cost.

Ultimately, I just think it’s unnecessarily cruel, and utterly pointless when we’re talking about someone who has so much that is perfectly valid to criticize her for.
