My parents (boomers) raised us four kids on my dad’s bus conductor wages (plus a bit of underpaid babysitting money for a few years) and had paid off the mortgage on our London house, which they bought when I was a baby, before I finished my GCSEs. And had both loft and kitchen extensions done.

My mum’s parents (first gen immigrants) had four houses purchased outright in the Midlands which they rented out. My grandmother was a stay at home mum. My granddad was a teacher.

I can’t even afford to buy a one bed flat :(
