Whether gay or straight, the man was a homophobic bigot that spent decades making the lives of gays and other vulnerable groups’ lives less safe. If he were also gay that would not only mean that he was a self-hating bigot, it would mean that he also enjoyed protection due to his position and due to his homophobic policies from the consequences of said policies while others suffered, which makes him a selfish hypocrite.
It is not homophobic to suspect that he was gay in an of itself, as many people do, myself included. The fact that he would take that accusation as an insult is what is homophobic, and the fact that that would make him a selfish hypocrite as well as a homophobe is icing on that cake. Our hatred of this man is not because he was gay. It is because he was a homophobic monster and a warmonger at minimum, gay or not.
