My reply to these replies here about Copyright being a bad idea (besides that Nintendo never pursued a Copyright claim with Palworld)…
I think Copyright is important to preserve rights. Without Copyright, we couldn’t have Open Source licenses like GPL. And the industry wants to sell products ideally not pirated, to make profit. Which is not a bad thing, because that encourages competition. Now that does not mean there are no loopholes and evil companies (and individuals) wouldn’t abuse it. But that does not mean that the entire idea of Copyright is bad or “bullshit”.
The idea of copyright in general may not be bad.
However, its current implementation is very much horrendous.
The current implementation is not really “horrendous”. It works well enough that its a net positive. Even with its flaws (because no law is perfect), I think we are better off with these Copyright laws around the world than without it. I never found anyone giving an example what could be done better; people just say its bad. In example, what specifically is so horrendous about the current “implementation” of Copyright? And how would it be better?
IMO you can seriously fix all copyright and patent law by halving their current duration. In the USA that means copyrights are author’s life + 35 years and works for hire should be something like 50 years. Patents similarly go from 20->10 years.
