This has always been a problem in the gaming community, but it’s been especially rampant for the last decade or so since Steve Bannon identified gamers as a demographic (largely comprised of insecure teenage boys) that is particularly susceptible to fascist messaging and threw money into signal-boosting the worst of it, and a bunch of impressionable dumbfucks went along with it.
Personally I think the whole concept of gamers is stupid. You cannot have a demographic comprise predominantly of multiple different sections of a population, that’s two broader of net to be casting. It’s like saying that everyone who drives a car is a car enthusiast.
Anyone who plays games is a gamer but there’s a huge range of ages, ethnicities, and nationalities. Besides someone who plays a lot of FPS is not the same as someone who predominantly plays grand strategy games or the Sims.
I kind of see it as there being people who play video games and “gamers”. The latter being people for whom gaming is a serious hobby they care about a lot. Then there is a subset of gamers (sometimes referred to as “Gamers” with a capital G) that are also shitty people who take it personally if there is any kind of minority representation in video games and are the people who call you slurs in multiplayer games either for not being good enough at the game or or being better at the game than them (depending on whether you are on their team or playing against them).
