The reason that IT often gets lumped with this stuff is because if you leave it to anybody else they do it wrong especially logistics.

Everyone except the IT department is now banned from ordering new IT equipment because they’ll order a bunch of laptops and then act all surprised when this huge pallet of devices arrives as if they didn’t just order one. So then it just sits in the entrance lobby the days on end until someone from IT comes and opens the pallet and takes the laptops upstairs. If they do that with new pens that’s fine, no one’s going to steal them.

It’ll be worse than smart watches that tell you that you’ve been sat down for too long.

Oh that’s useful. I’ve often wondered what my current emotion is, I’m so glad technology has been created to help me with this issue.

There’s so many cheats that are only possible because the game’s net code is just weirdly implemented.

That’s one of the problems with having an open loop. Cold water comes in and it has a tiny quantity of an infectious agent, far too smaller quantity to be a problem for anyone.

Then Meta kindly warms that water up by running it through lots of hot computers, the bacterium multiply and do so at a rate proportionate to the temperature (if it goes too hot they die but I doubt even an AI data centre is going to get that hot), then the water gets dumped back into the mains water grid complete with all its lovely infectious agents.

You get bacteria growing in closed loop systems as well, that isn’t an issue because it’s closed loop you just have to clean it out every now and then.

That’s the problem with making RAM so expensive. It’s not physically very big so you can fit a lot of it in a truck

I was going to push back on your point here, but then I couldn’t think of a game that makes a good counterpoint.

The Finals, Battlefield 5 (amazingly it has no loot boxes), Helldivers 2, Arc Raiders, all have anti-cheat so need kernel level access, but they’re not predatory.

It’s only slow if you’re running a slow computer. Anyway it’s way faster than all your electron apps which each insist on taking up four for gigabytes of RAM

I used to work at a place that had dot matrix printers for printing on envelopes, there was some complicated reason why this couldn’t be upgraded, anyway the computer that ran that was an Acorn, with all its three mouse button goodness, it could only save to floppy disk and the only supplier of old floppy disks is like this one random dude who seems to have bought up the global supply of floppy disks back when they were discontinued. Apparently he makes bank.

Some of Microsoft’s corporate products are actually quite good, if very boring. I would love it if Linux had some version of Active Directory, although Microsoft’s attempts to cloudify it are a very annoying. Fortunately you can just ignore that, at least for now.

They also get a lot of credit for releasing VSCode for free as well.

I don’t really know what it is, but I do know that a whole bunch of stuff doesn’t work if you don’t have it installed. That and Java.

I would be quite prepared to pay a price for an operating system if it meant that it just works the way that Windows just works but without all the bloat. I’m really not all that interested and installing an operating system that likes to fight me.
