Of course everybody and their dog is adding their own opinion to liberalism, as it is the dominant ideology nowadays. But liberalism began with the question: what if the king shouldn’t be in charge?
Per the literal first sentence of the Wikipedia page that appears as the first result when you search “liberalism”, liberalism is based on several different pillars, only one or maybe two of which could arguably be reduced down to “what if the king shouldn’t be in charge?”. The only way it would make sense to describe liberalism as just “the right to self-determination” is if the only thing you have to compare it against is like, feudalism or fascism.
Well, yes. Considering liberalism is an anti-monarchist movement at heart, comparing it to feudalism is actually very reasonable.
