  • i’m a millennial and i carry neither a wallet nor keys

digital ID, apple pay, and codes instead of keys

i lose cards and keys basically monthly if they’re on me. before technology i literally tied things to my bags and clothes. they still sometimes got lost… or i locked myself out (sometimes a weekly occurrence)

actually worse because now any random person has your ID and cards… not much someone can do with a phone to extract your info… and getting a digital ID back is usually just a matter of logging in again: no cancelling cards, requesting replacements, potentially paying fees

you still have a physical ID at home… you just don’t carry it around so it can be lost or damaged

i’ve lost my ID plenty… i’ve never lost a phone, and even if i did it’s trackable, and the ID is secure so it can’t be sold for identity theft

and getting the license back even if the phone is completely lost or damaged beyond repair is just logging into the app again; no bureaucracy

i have less problem with that part… if we want to encourage blood donation (we do, and people find it icky because needles) i think it’s perfectly fine

but it’d be much less cringe if it was: “take the day off work on us”, or “treat yourself to something nice today”

it’s the education costing money coupled with the fact that giving blood is among the only options that’s the problem imo

  • “freedom” isn’t a single implementation… freedom is no freedom from (other people) and freedom to (do what you like

you’re free to swing your fist (freedom to) until it impacts me (freedom from - being hit)

even american law acknowledges this in the way that “freedom to” has its limits in order to protect “freedom from” (though their idea of freedom to, although probably among the broadest in the world legally, is hamstrung by their actual ability to exercise that freedom to because of money and probably not nearly enough freedom from)

  • people conflate 2 kinda of liberal: liberal is the same root word as liberty, libertarian: liber, which basically means free

economic liberal (like the australian liberal party) means free from government interference in business/economy. it’s basically libertarian

socially liberal means free from government interference in your life (ie liberty; government says nothing about lgbtqi+ unless it’s about protecting you from discrimination)

in the US in particular “liberal” has tended to means socially liberal (at least in how they campaign) but neoliberal economically (pro big business)

socialism is actually diametrically opposed to economic liberalism
