And Microsoft doesn’t care much for gamers on desktops, they’ll mostly cater to the Xbox players that runs a basically slimmed down and locked version of Windows.

Cheap storage and RAM availability (until recently) meant that developers could sacrifice space and minimize the amount of compression on assets.
Decompressing files require processing, and if you can avoid that, then you free up some computer resources.
Too bad that this runs using a battery, would have been nice if the Steam Machine included some pogo pins I/O for that kind of thing.
