  • The aspect ratio of the A series of paper is √2, so every doubling or halving of the size retains the same aspect ratio. If you want to save paper and print at half size, you can just do that and it works flawlessly. However doing it this way means very unmemorable decimal unit dimensions.

Half letter and tabloid are much taller than letter so you have to either have overly large margins on the top and bottom, or you have to reformat your document if you ever want to change the sizes.

Though specialty paper suppliers do sell 22x17 paper if you really want to double fold to get letter paper. 11x17 is twice the width of letter which works for printing bifold books in letter size. Its just the scaling aspect ratio thing. Sizes in multiples for bookmaking do exist in both systems.

  • The senate should exist. Giving small areas extra power is a fine compermise. The biggest problem with the senate is not that it gives disproportionate representation, that is the point of it, but that there are many small non-state areas that cannot benefit from it. They should have two senators each if they choose to accept it.

DC is probably the most notable non-state area of the us. Give them statehood if they want it. There are 5 inhabited territories, each of which should have two senators and statehood should they choose to accept it.

The us also has 326 Indian reservations. They are all small inhabited non-state parts of the us. They should each get two senators and statehood should they choose to accept it.

Giving every segment of the united states a place in the senate will fix the issues with it. The most underrepresented places in the senate are not the largest ones, like California as the article claims, but those parts of the country that do not have senators at all. This is a solvable problem.

  • Florida has closed primaries, and the winner is chosen by plurality. Only registered democrats can vote for democrats, and only registered republicans can vote for republicans.

The two groups this article pits against each other weren’t running in the same elections. This shows changes within the groups of registered democrats, and registered republicans, but it says basically nothing about the electorate as a whole.

Current numbers for party registration in Florida is 5.6m registered republicans, 4.0m registered democrats, 3.3m registered with no party affiliation, and 0.5m registered with minor parties. Not a change on that front really.

  • One of the other mayors was doing exactly this. Large municipal projects take time. This project, which includes large on-street municipal garbage bins, and new residential garbage cans, was started under Mamdani’s predecessor. This is an Eric Adams project that is only reaching the point of installations during Mamdani’s tenure.

Mamdani is great and all, but he’s not the one solely responsible for every good thing that happens in NY.

  • That’s how AI testers work and its why they don’t. Most forms of formal writing are predictable by design. If the AI can predict predictable formulaic writing, it doesn’t mean its AI, its probably just any form of professional writing other than fiction.

Famous public domain works will always be considered AI by those tests, because of course your LLM knows the american national constitution. It was in the training data, so it can predict it with 100% accuracy, therefore your test wrongly calls it AI.

Testing for AI writing that way does not work.

  • Control. Unions get a seat at the negotiating table. With a union things have to be done by mutual agreement, and the workers have recourse if things go wrong. Being a manager is much more powerful without a unionized workforce, finance notwithstanding.

They often personally take unionization as an insult or betrayal, so they try and get revenge using the one thing available to them at that stage. With overwhelming support, it’s only a matter of time before the vote passes and they are forced to recognize the union.

This is not uncommon. Managers want to rule over people without restraint even in nonprofits.
