I hadn’t really considered this but this does make a lot of sense. Poor people don’t have 3D printers or cnc machines.

Yeah I thought steganography was hiding messages in images.
Ok I just looked it up, apparently it can be anything. Images, audio, video, or even text.
I remember I had this Perl module once that would convert passwords into a binary string and then convert that string into spaces and tabs. Looked like a blank file. I guess that was technically steganography.

Totally agree. Well except for the when part. I’d say it’s more realistically if. I still expect these asshats to do something drastic and the best response is a strongly worded letter.

Yeah this bullshit that you can’t appoint a justice in an election year and then ram one through in the last second just because your republican is infuriating. Fuck Mitch McConnell…

TIL in 1974 the U.S. tried permanent DST during an energy crisis … it saved little energy, fuel use slightly increased, and public support collapsed after one dark winter, so the law was repealed within 10 months.
God forbid we’d learn from past mistakes.

I tried to have the conversation of just doing away with time zones all together with my wife once. She could not understand that the number associated with when it gets daylight and when it gets dark is arbitrary. Instead of getting daylight around 6am it would be getting daylight around 10am (if we adopted UTC for example) or gets dark around midnight (12AM). The weird thing is she lived in Alaska far enough north that during the summer it didn’t even really get dark at night. I also wanted to talk about the alternative calendars like the IFC or the Gormanian but I’m pretty sure I would have broken her brain. She’s pretty sharp but apparently abstract thought about concrete things like dates and time are a bridge too far.

Because of existing time zones aren’t we already different from the rest of the world? You make other good points but the rest of the world comparison seems odd. If anything just picking one is more consistent and safer regardless. I mean if you wanna talk about weird, the entire mainland china is one time zone, China Standard Time.
I grew up maybe 30 min from Marmet and never even heard of this until I went to college in NC.

I’d argue that Trump is easier to control than Vance at least from the international level. Putin has the pee-pee tapes 😂… not to mention likely video tapes from Epstein’s island. As much as I dislike Vance I don’t think he’s a kid diddler.

No but it was definitely implied by the headline. A word prediction machine, no matter how useful, is never going to be an AGI. And don’t get me wrong, I find LLMs very useful for lots of things. But the model they are chasing is never going to be an AGI, no matter how much info you feed it.
I also wouldn’t predict against an LLM helping to create an AGI either. I have this analogy in my head…
I hammer is a useful tool. It can do many things. It can even put a screw into a piece of wood through a very brute force method. This does not make a hammer a screw driver. Could you use a hammer to help in construction of a machine to build a screw driver? Most definitely, likely even required.
Anybody suggesting they have an AGI built from the current process is a tech bro looking for funding.
