Avid PC gamer, Linux convert, SCP fan.

Love Science Fiction, Cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic settings; Fan of the games of the defunct Arkane Studios. Listening to (Power-, Speed-, Thrash-)Metal, Gothic, Deathrock, EBM, Vaporwave, Lo-Fi; Classic and Musicals are fine too. Can’t stand Hip-Hop.

Owned by two cats, recently divorced, blessed with a personality disorder (AVPD) - pensioned (even the state has the opinion I’m a total wreck lol). This causes me to be unable to keep up personal connections and makes me ghost literally everyone, so if it happens to you, sorry in advance.

Chronically online.

Pro GenAI, but Anti-GenAI-Corpos; this technology should be available to everyone, which would only be fair since we all contributed to it. Datasets and Models should be under the jurisdiction of UNESCO, since they are literally the distilled cultural output of humanity.

  • This might change tho. The current push for digital autonomy by the EU is creating a pretty large movement towards open source and Linux in many countries. Sure, it’s not an overwhelming amount of machines simply dropping windows, but it increases the amount of Linux and OSS software in government and attached business by a significant share of the market, creating a pull effect.

This might be what makes other businesses move away from Microsoft in the long run. Being able to say that the data you store is safe from US government agencies simply because you aren’t attached to them anymore might be a plus in the current - and even more in future - markets.

It’s similar to what happened in the server space. Everything was IIS, until it wasn’t because OSS became the thing to use. These days MS rents out Linux servers.

Edit: this doesn’t mean that we won’t be stuck with Windows legacy stuff for the next decades tho :-(

  • Every religion has their enemy laid out in scripture; It’s important to see that even if there are “enemies” defined in a religious movement, that all of those people still have the option of living the pacifist variant of their religion.

I personally am an atheist, but i am able to see that there are many religious movements out there that substantially improve the life of people. I - sadly - recognize that the moment you mix religion with nationalism you achieve a mindset where everything that isn’t according to the most hardline shit in your scripture becomes heresy. I simply postulate that theologians free of nationalist impulses tend to be a much more positive influence on society.

  • I personally am an atheist. from what i have seen in my life, i have formed the opinion that people living their religion with the intent of being good are actually not harming someone, but are strengthening communities. I sadly have to agree that there are sooooo many people out there using religion as an excuse to abuse and murder.

It’s the same with islam or christianity. if you want to use it to make your world better, you will probably focus on the part where you welcome your neighbor and support your community - many religious communities act this way. But the moment where you start othering people using religion, you aren’t really following your belief anymore, you are using it as a weapon; and if you mix it with a nationalist movement, you get shit like the Zionists or ISIS.

  • If you are suggesting that LLMs are sentient, then this isn’t a “mild disagreement”, it’s the San Andreas fault.

I am certain that LLMs are a step into the direction of AGI, but it’s a small piece of the puzzle. There are so many technological leaps that have to happen before AGI can become real that I am certain that neither of us will see that day.

If you have such an open mind, then please also read the paper they released, which is a lot more careful in how all of this is framed. This article is here to drive VC funding, not for scientific accuracy, and this is not the first time Anthropic has framed things in a sensationalist way that had no basis in the reality of the paper. (the blackmail-thing for example.)

  • You think those companies have any shred of decency? Even if they could prove without a doubt that these statistical models are more than just that - that wouldn’t change a thing in how they were used. We can’t even agree that all humans should have the same amount of rights - how do you think an sentient program would fare?

And regarding the global economy: the only “global economy” thing i can see at the moment is a group of companies that are overvalued because of circular cash flows and artificial hype that stems from an assumption that LLMs can somehow become AGI, which would inflate the value of those companies into infinity. We are currently not even able to measure a ROI for these things, and companies worldwide are pulling emergency breaks in usage because of the costs, which are not even covering what the inference itself costs. The only “Global” thing here will be the crash, fucking up the DIY PC market for a decade or longer.
