I’m curious as to whether you’ve seen ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, to which coincidentally ‘Interstellar’ pays tribute imo. I’m wondering if you were similarly infuriated by the ending.

I still can’t figure out installing Audacious. Keeps telling me the package requires dependancies, but won’t install them.

Some pseudofiles under /proc are only readable by the user running the process, and of course root can read everything. So it’s the standard Unix security model, afaics.

For example, any process’ command-line arguments are famously visible to everyone, while the environment variables only to the user of the process.

That raises the question of how their ps, top, lsof and such work, since afaik in Linux they read from /proc.

P.S. Looks like BSDs tug at the kernel via syscalls, namely sysctl and also the ‘kvm interface’ in the case of MacOS (not sure what ‘kvm’ thing is meant here). Seems vaguely reasonable, since procfs also queries the kernel for the info, so about the same resources would be used, perhaps even with the overhead of filesystem traversal and string-numbers conversion.

These days there can be a dozen virtual filesystems doing various stuff. If you ever want to get quite baffled, install a terminal emulator on an Android phone (not Termux) and run mount.

If you have a tablet, that’s a whole another world: I’ve played OpenTTD and a port of ‘Master of Orion’ on mine. You can also run a whole bunch of DOS games with Magic Dosbox, or graphic adventures with ScummVM.

Curiously, I’ve had a pair of cheap earbuds that I typically used one at a time, putting it in the case when the battery expired and switching to the other. Pretty sure neither the earbuds nor my aging phone support BLE. However, there might’ve been some shenanigans with the case being a Bluetooth device of its own, presumably relaying to the buds.

Supposedly Bluetooth Low Energy specifically uses less energy than classic Bluetooth. Both because of the radio and protocol differences, and because of more efficient codecs.

‘Xenonauts’ is probably your best bet, since it’s said to be faithful to the original games and received very good reviews.

Original devs like Julian Gollop, who made his own spiritual successor ‘Phoenix Point’ in 2019? Which unfortunately turned out to be so-so.

Or you could look at third-party developers instead, since ‘Xenonauts’ was received much better.
