  • That aside digital surveillance prison already exists. Google, Meta, Amazon etc. know enough about their users to build a complete day-by-day activity list with high accuracy. Phones listen constantly, Windows logs all you do on their servers, the dystopian tech is already there. Whet most dystopian predictions missed is that instead of endless rows of Secret Service officers watching you, it’s the advertisers who want to milk your attention.

Dystopian police state will start when police starts offering money for reporting crimes. Then all this data will pour into their hands, neatly tagged, packaged and sold.

  • My country has committed countless acts that would be considered atrocities either now or at the time. We had several groups of second-class citizens, dabbled in genocide, were religiously tolerant, sided with nazis, sided with communists, convinced muslims that alcohol is okay, foiled plans of every ally and enemy we came into contact with, our president endorsed Trump and was endorsed by Trump, successfully invaded russia twice, enlisted animals into army and had pedophiles among clergy.

And we still have several movements, modern or historical, portraying us as the good guys and calling us “Jesus of nations”

  • I shall share a personal experience and opinion, I’m telling y’all early so you can skip it if you want.

I finished several projects with AI assisting me in my work. As someone who has masters degree in AI (done before current AI craze) I really wanted to see the new thing in action, even though I knew it was over-advertised and over-hyped.

AI is a good tool for a programmer in the same sense as Google Search is a good tool for a programmer. And just like haphazardly copying code from stackoverflow doesn’t make you a good programmer, neither does AI. Anyone who tries to either have agentic AI write everything for him, or just copies code from LLM will eventually end up with confusing mess that even experienced programmers will have hard time to work with.

AI is good for quick questions - what is the data type, what is syntax here and there, what library provides specific feature… but terrible at making, expanding and managing large projects. Few years back I would tell my peers “just google it, you will get better results” but sadly Google Search entered such a terrible enshittification phase even before AI craze, that in my personal experience it’s faster and more accurate to ask LLM most coding questions.

Purely vibe coded apps are abandoned because the proper answer to “can a vibe coder add feature X to his app” is sadly and expectedly “fuck you”. My current project - Baba Yaga was created with AI assist, by treating AI like Google Search and occasionally as a junior dev to re-write boring parts (that could have been done with a script probably). If all LLMs got shut down tomorrow, my workflow would barely change, I would just start complaining about current state of Google Search a bit more.

  • The idea of communism/socialism assumes that if society produces enough food/clothing/etc. for everyone, then why not just redistribute it fairly between everyone instead of relying on money. Socialism assumes that resources can be redistributed by government policy alongside otherwise capitalist system, while communism prefers to get rid of personally-owned-capital completely.

It has it’s fair share of problems like usually not taking transportation into account or assuming that if one person needs half a pound of meat a day then another needs the same. It generally requires politicians to run the country like playing a game, game where goal is to make sure everyone has at least basic needs covered. Usually this backfires for the same reason capitalism turns into shithole - people are greedy and incompetent.
