If you’re handy with a soldering iron and know how to read a JTAG port, every chip on the pcb could be lifted and repurposed. Afaik a lot of them use miniature solar panels as power sources, which is absolutely repurposeable if you’re comfortable crimping cables. This piece too far from my area of expertise to do more than just speculate on, but I have to assume they have optical components that could be repurposed by somebody with the right skillset too

Plus the ace cashier will be a friendly face when you’re back in the store for the 4th time that day, after being sure you bought all needed components of your project during your first trip

It smells like bullshit to me too. I dont live anywhere near Maine to have personal experience about it, but reading mainstream media stuff about the “terrible things platner has done” feels a lot like reading a study paid for by an oil company about how climate change isnt really that bad. The incentives of the sources are far too conflicted for me to put much stock in what they say
