Truly a horrifying read. As a parent of a tween, I don’t think I could be more worried. This is going to suck.

Ok, yeah I can believe that. And if you’re using it for art printing, you may even be printing often enough that the feed lines don’t dry up and clog.

Personally, I like that with laser prints, if someone gets the paper wet, the toner doesn’t immediately run all over the page like with ink.

But again, less of an issue for art prints, as the results are more likely to be put in a frame than left out on a table where they can get splashed.

I feel like this is not rocket science here, this is like business 101.

You could if you want. But then again, remember that most people will be replacing that toner cartridge only once every 2-5 years. So it’s not like a major expense.

It depends on how much you print of course, like if you’re a teacher or something, you might print a lot.

Having been an IT guy for a very long time this is my recommendation to everyone. Buy a cheap laser printer for your home. Ink jet is garbage it will piss you off every time you want to print something, it’s a trap. Go with whatever brand you want, but brother is the one I’d recommend most

In my home I have a brother color laser printer, it may have run over $300, I don’t recall. But I don’t recall because I think I bought it 15 years ago and it still works just fine every time I need to print. No regrets.

New laws in California and New York might stop people from 3D printing guns

It absolutely, positively, will not do that. If someone wants to print a gun, no legislation is going to stop them. It could at best, slow them down by maybe an hour, as they find, download and install different firmware for their printer.

If you want to prevent people from printing guns, you’ll need a different tactic, because that won’t do it.

You need that leg enhancement.

It’s the only way to play the game. If you played all the way through without trying this, all I can say is you missed out.

Yeah, that’s fair. I don’t really have my finger on the pulse of AI tech, but llama was a thing I remembered.

Well they’re developing llama I believe. Which (credit where credit is due), is one of the few open source gpl language models. And you can run it locally, without imposed limits or sending tons of data off to Meta servers.

They can call it whatever they want, the bottom line is that a human is behind the wheel and ultimately they’re responsible.

And I think it has been well established at this point that fsd isn’t ready yet, that it’s not safe. The fact that they call it “full self driving” is cute… but it’s marketing, it’s not a get out of jail free card.

That’s really interesting. I’ve never really thought about it in this light, but a search engine’s job is generally just to point you at a bunch of information that could be what your looking for. But they don’t generate any content, so as a result they aren’t really liable or in any way responsible for what you find, they aren’t telling you anything.

But a generative AI, well those are very much their words, they don’t have any link to hide behind, they are absolutely responsible for anything their AI tells you. This explicitly exposes them to legal risk in a way that they never were before.

I hope that in the rest of the world our courts can all make similar rulings. When people search for information you should not be allowed to generate something and provide them that answer as if it were a fact, without taking responsibility for it.
