My uncle stopped donating blood in the 80s because they couldn’t say that there was zero chance of getting AIDS when donating. The odds were probably very slim that a person unknowingly hiv+ gives blood and the nurse doesn’t dispose of the needle immediately and another nurse picks up a dirty needle and uses it on him.

There are protocols in place to prevent this exact thing, but he just stopped donating.
