Democrats had the chance to deal with Trump during Biden’s term and they just waffled around until the chance passed. Then he got elected a second time. As much as Americans want to waffle that they can’t do anything about it they can. They can vote in primaries, they can start grassroots campaigns, they can protest. All I’ve seen until now from the American people is that Simpsons line: “We’ve tried nothing and we’re out of ideas.” That doesn’t inspire confidence that things will change and other countries are noticing that.
There’s also the fact that Trump has a 30% approval rating. That’s unheard of in a democratic country. Merz in Germany, which is not even remotely close to being as bad as Trump has an 18% approval rating. Macron has a 17% approval rating. For a leader that Americans say is so unpopular 30% approval rating is huge, it’s a third of the country.
30% of people are authoritarians. They want to have someone order them around. They’re weak and have essentially joined a cult of personality. You can’t just get people to leave a cult. Reason and personal harm don’t phase them like it should. It’ll take removing the personality and then generations of dealing with the fallout as MAGA falls into small localized cults. It’s a historically long mess to deal with.
TBF Merz’ approval rating is a historic low for a German chancellor. IIRC 30% is about normal, for a normal head of state that doesn’t constantly insult the population or introduce unpopular reforms.
Absolutely understandable, Trump has been allowed to continue so far almost completely without interference, every time Trump is stopped by legalities, he just pauses for a while, and then continues again claiming the legal claim is now outdated for whatever bullshit reason. And there is very little indication that the Democrats have the guts to do anything serious. Maybe in a year they’ll start another investigation after having thought very hard about it, and that too goes nowhere, because then Democrats will lose the next election, because people are sick of Democrats doing nothing.
The problem is also that it’s not just the American politicians and flawed democracy we don’t trust, it’s the American people. A people that can elect Trump twice is simply not trustworthy.
On the upside there are a few fighters among the Democrats, but unfortunately they are a minority among the Democrats that themselves are currently a minority in representation.
Support people like David Hogg, he is trying to modernize the democratic party from the inside. and that’s what Americans need to support IMO.
Good luck to the Americans in the election, I’m not betting on much, but I am still hoping.
A people that can elect Trump twice is simply not trustworthy.
They elected that shit stain on humanity twice. Vile.
Obama was far from perfect, but he was also far from as bad as Trump.
Democrats are the lesser evil, and the left of the Democratic party is doing pretty well currently AFAIK.
Although Obama was also a war criminal, opposition to the current Israeli and US war crimes is way more likely to come from democrats than republicans.@Buffalox
I agree with all of that.
But as I say, it’s an inch toward what it should be. (Granted, Trump is a mile off in the other direction.)
And as yet we have no idea yet who might run from the “good” side in 2028, and on what policy platform other than the standard, safe, promises.Surely USA needs someone more left wing than Obama IMO, the healthcare reform was an ugly compromise with the Republicans, and USA still doesn’t have healthcare for all. Something all European democracies take for granted.
But to be honest I am not giving nearly as much of a shit as I used to.
EU finally waking up after Trump was elected for his 2nd term, and working in unison towards independence from USA on both technology and military equipment has been an important step.
We care very much about USA because USA has a dominant global position. But now USA is losing that, and I don’t think a Democratic president in 2029 can save it again.@Buffalox
Yes. I’ve been calling on the EU for years to build independence and resilience in everything from tech to finance to energy to security – from the US in particular. The problem is, it took a shock like Trump to get them to start building these when it could take years, or even decades, to get done. In the meantime they remain vulnerable to any US tantrum (or Russian madness, as we have seen with energy dependence). It’s insane that Russia really believed they had the upper hand when they turned off the gas to EU.
Ah well the joke is on them, because EU is helping Ukraine more than ever now. And the Russians are getting their asses kicked now. Unfortunately it’s very tough on the Ukrainians, but we will continue to help them when the war is over.
Nor are actual progressive Americans
@CAVOK
Or Palestine.I certainly wouldn’t bet on it, sadly. I would be delighted were they to prove otherwise, though.
I wouldn’t count on a Democratic congress to do absolutely anything, unless you’re part of a specific minority in the US.
For everyone else on the planet any changes in US governments are marginal at best. They’ll still be exploited or worse.
The only ways out of this are mass uprisings or the US losing an all-out war.
