New economic data shows inflation rose by 3.7 per cent in the US in September, up from 3.4 per cent in August.
The increase was mostly driven by surging energy prices, particularly fuel, which ended September more than 34 per cent higher than this time last year.
The conflict with Iran in the Middle East remains the chief cause underpinning these price increases, despite the US military’s ongoing operation to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and the White House recently announcing a deal to purchase Russian diesel.
It’s bad news for Republicans weeks ahead of the midterms, with cost of living and economic pressures estimated to be front of mind for many voters.
