PlayStation discs will soon be gone!
Wtf #sony ?
The #playstation account announced in a blog post that they will stop making game discs altogether. http://play.st/4v86Wg3
This means :
- No buying second hand. Once the game is not sold anymore nobody can buy it
- Can not bring the game to someone’s house and play together, now you need to log into your account
- Sony can, for any or no reason remove a game from your library
- If you paid extra for a PS5 with a disc drive, too bad, you can’t use the drive you paid extra for with games beyond 2028!
- Overall, a very slippery slope for ownership.

The discs have been a joke for a long time anyway. The first time I put a disc in and then was immediately prompted for a software update, it felt like I was cosplaying. Like what’s even the point? Modern discs don’t do anything anyway.
They are a physical token of ownership mainly, which is very important as Sony has demonstrated that will happily remove content you’ve bought because licensing ran out. That’s a huge boundary to cross.
What makes you think they can’t take away your license to a physical copy? Concord anyone?
They totally could but that’s a hell of a line to cross. Not so much the online only stuff, but like literally everything? Why actually buy things at that point?
Its not just that they could. They already have. Guess you’d better stop buying.
yes? that’s pretty much what’s going on.
I don’t understand. You just suggested that they could but wouldn’t…
I think I’m a bit confused and I was probably a bit tired last night. To recap I think they are probably going down the line where eventually you’ll have games removed from your psn profile similar to how they removed the movies from licensing issues. I’m certainly not buying a new console while they are going down that road, no new games I don’t have physical ownership of the media it’s on.
Steam has a history of not removing things that you’ve already bought which I think is crazy important for consumer confidence. PlayStation feels like it’s shooting itself in the foot so hard with this, I have no idea why they think it’s a good idea. I mean obviously short-sighted money bullshit, but you’d think they’d understand the importance of long term planning with their 6th console.
Games not being playable on a PS5 with a disc drive is a bit much. They have internal storage the same as all other PS5s. In addition, discs are essentially just physical licenses these days and have been since the late days of the PS4. Rarely is the game that’s on the actual disc playable. More often than not you need to install an update to make it playable, meaning even if you have the disc you are still relying on Sony to ensure the game can be played.
I don’t think this is excusable or acceptable, but I do think people are blowing it out of proportion. PC gaming has been digital only for well over a decade. This is no different.
In my opinion it is very different because if PS decides every game is now 120 euros you have no alternative. If Steam decides the same, you have all the other stores to compete. The open platform argument.
