Up to firmware 12.70 which isn’t quite as bad as just launch consoles, but still. Give it time, motivated hackers make some insane things happen.

It wasn’t for no reason, it was caused by having a disc in the drive while changing the consoles orientation. You had to remove discs from the drive before standing it up or laying it on its side due to the design of the tray, otherwise the disc would stick halfway between a slot on the side of the tray and get wrecked by the laser carriage.
